Hamartiology

Sin’s Definition

  • Sin is a transgression of the law of God (Romans 2:23; 5:14; Galatians 3:19)
  • Sin is a failure to conform to the standard of God. (Romans 3:23)
  • Sin is a principle within man. (Romans 7:14, 17-25; Galatians 3:22)
  • Sin is rebellion against God. (Titus 2:12-14; I John 3:4)
  • Sin is wrongful acts towards God and man. (Exodus 20:12-17; Romans 1:18)

Sin’s Origin

  • Satan committed first sin (Isaiah 14:12-14)
  • Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden, causing all man to inherit the sinful nature. (Genesis 3:1-6; Romans 5:12)
  • Sin reveals what is in the heart of man. (Matthew 15:19)

Sin’s Consequences

  • Physical and spiritual death (Genesis 3:14-19; Romans 6:23; 8:19-23)
  • For Christians, loss of fellowship with God. (Psalm 66:18)

Sin’s Defeat

  • For Unbelievers
    • Substitutionary atonement of Christ, His burial and Resurrection (Romans 5:8)
    • Sinners must repent to be redeemed. (Luke 13:3; I John 1:9)
  • For Believers – provisions made to defeat sin’s attack
    • The Word of God (Psalm 119:9-16; II Timothy 3:16)
    • The Intercession of Christ (Hebrews 7:25; I John 2:1)
    • Indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8)
