The Inspiration of the Scriptures

  • God’s Word is totally and completely inspired by God (II Timothy 3:16)
  • Inspiration means “God Breathed”
  • Holy men of God wrote the Scriptures when moved to do so by the Holy Spirit (II Peter 1:21)
  • Proofs of the Scripture Being Inspired
    • OT writers claim divine inspiration (Jeremiah 1:7-9)
    • NT writers claim divine inspiration (II Peter 1:20-21)
  • Definition of Revelation: the act of God by which he directly communicates truth not known before by the human mind.
    • General Revelation – God revealing Himself in history and nature.
    • Special Revelation – God revealing Himself in the Scriptures and in His Son.
  • Definition of Illumination – A divine action on the mind of man by the Holy Spirit through Scriptures.

The Practicality of the Scriptures

  • Concerning Unsaved Man
    • Scripture claims man’s responsibility (Romans 1:19-20)
    • Scripture when trusted gives man salvation (Romans 1:16)
    • Scripture condemns those who reject Christ. (John 3:36)
  • Concerning Saved Man
    • Scripture guides and directs our lives (Psalm 119:105)
    • Scripture equips a believer for God’s service (II Timothy 3:17)
    • Scripture, when memorized and applied, will keep a man from sin (Psalm 119:11)

The Reliability of Scriptures

  • Christ validates Old Testament Books (John 5:45-47)
  • Paul validates the New Testament Books (II Timothy 3:15-17)
  • God promises to preserve His Word throughout the ages (Psalm 12:6-7)
  • God promises to protect His Word throughout the ages. (Revelation 22:18-19)
