Angelology

The Existence of Angels

  • Angels were created in the beginning with the rest of creation. (Nehemiah 9:6; Colossians 1:16-17)
  • Angels are mentioned in many books of the Bible (Mark 8:38; Hebrews 12:22; Revelations 12:7)
  • Existence of Angels tied to testimony of Christ
    • Christ was helped by angels following temptation. (Matthew 4:11)
    • Christ referred to resurrected state comparable to angels. (Matthew 22:29-30)
    • Christ taught the angles would re-gather Israel at His return (Matthew 25:31-32)

The Nature of Angels

  • They are spiritual beings (Psalm 104:4; Hebrews 1:14)
  • They are beings of great might and power (Psalm 103:20; Isaiah 37:36; II Thessalonians 1:7; II Peter 2:11)
  • There are at least three types of angels
    • Archangel (Jude 9)
    • Seraphim (Isaiah 6:2,6)
    • Cherubim (Genesis 3:24)

The Work of Angels

  • Heavenly ministry – priestly service and worship (Isaiah 6; Revelations 5:11,12; 8:3,4)
  • Earthly ministry:
    • They guide the believer  (Acts 8:26; 10:3)
    • They cheer and strengthen God’s people. (I Kings 19:5-8; Matthew 4:11; Luke 22:43)
    • They defend, protect and deliver God’s servants. (Daniel 6:22; Acts 5:19; 12:8-11)
    • They are eyewitnesses of the church and the believer. (I Corinthians 4:91; I Timothy 5:21)
    • They accompany Christ at His second coming. (Matthew 25:31-32; II Thessalonians 1:7, 8)

Satan and Demons (Fallen Angels)

  • Satan rebelled against his original estate and was cast out of   Heaven (Isaiah 14:12; Luke 10:18)
  • “Satan is here set forth as a murderer, liar, and sinner- all elements   of personality.  He had the ‘power over death’ Hebrews 2:14, and is the        ‘prince of this world’ (John 14:30).” (John 8:44; I John 3:8)
  • The place and power of Satan
    • A mighty angel (Jude 9)
    • Prince of devils (Matthew 9:34; 2:24; Ephesians 2:2)
    • The god of this world. (II Corinthians 4:4)
    • He heads a kingdom which is against the kingdom of God and Christ. (Acts 26:18; Colossians 1:13)
  • The character of Satan
    • The adversary or Satan (Zechariah 3:1; I Peter 5:8)
    • The Devil, Diablos (Matthew 13:39; Revelations 12:9)
    • The Wicked One (Matthew 13:19)
    • The Tempter (Genesis 3:1-6; Matthew 4:3)
  • The destiny of Satan
    • He is a conquered enemy (John 12:31; Colossians 2:15; I John 3:8)
    • He is under a perpetual curse. (Genesis 3:14; Isaiah 65:25)
    • He is finally to be cast alive into the Lake of Fire forever. (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10)
  • Demons are fallen angels who rebelled against God when Lucifer fell from Heaven (II Peter 2:4; Jude 6)
  • Demons can possess and destroy unbelievers. (Luke 8:30; Acts 16:16)
  • Demons are sometimes the impetus behind false doctrine. (I Corinthians 10:20; Revelation 9:20)
